Do's and Don'ts in Web Designing

Web Design is an art and it has to please the visitors of the site and bring in more repeat visitors. A stunning and striking web design will be unique among thousands of similar websites and will impress and generate repeat visitors. Our subconscious mind plays the trick here in attracting more visitors. Knowingly or unknowingly our mind is attracted towards the website with appealing colour and design. This repeat visiting would surely turn them into potential customers. The ‘attract visitors and convert them to customers’ policy will yield better results.

So, to design an attractive web design, as a designer or as a webmaster, you have to remember certain do’s and don’ts. Here are a few to consider:

>> Professional Look – When you are planning for a professional website, avoid using flashing text and marquee tags. These two will reduce the image of your website and decrease the importance of the message conveyed. It is advisable to use normal text and highlight it professionally.

>> Distracting Graphics – The most distracting factor in a website is the use of unrelated graphical images for navigation, playing of background music while navigating through the site and the under construction pages. When a visitor sees the under construction pages he/she may even quit your website. So, don’t use unnecessary graphical navigational buttons and musical notes which may confuse and divert their mind of the visitors.

>> Page Design – Maintain a consistent design throughout the website. It will help to bring uniform, professional and neat look to the website. Also, users/visitors will be facilitated by easy access to the website. The total page size should not exceed 60k as it would help in easy page download.

>> Navigation – When considering navigation, do not divert visitors from one page to the other automatically. It will antagonise your visitors and most of them would never return to your site. There will be a break in the coherency of the visitors. Also, redirecting to other sites has the same effect as of diverting visitors from one page to the other.

>> Pop ups – JavaScript is a gift to the designers, which helps to inform visitors about any server delays or to show any useful client-side dynamism in the website. But the dosage of pop-ups should be minimal. Unnecessary and unwanted pop-ups might annoy the visitors. A good designer will never require a pop-up and would never use it in his/her design.

>> Appearance – After finalizing the design and completing all the design aspects, you have to concentrate on aligning and designing the content. Never try to highlight many points; you will end up in highlighting nothing. Align the content which will fit the page design. Justifying the content sometimes may end up in extra space between words in the sentence. So, differentiate using colours for hyperlink and stressed keywords which would make some sense to your content.

Remembering the above points and avoiding the don’t features will definitely help you bring out the best web design. These are not mere points; they lie behind the success of XEL Web Design as we follow them to achieve customer satisfaction and the satisfaction of designing world class websites.
